Customs and Traditions
1.Family Reunion Dinner: On the eve of Chinese New Year, families gather for a big reunion dinner. This meal is rich in symbolic foods, such as dumplings (象征着财富), fish (symbolizing surplus), and rice cakes (年年高升, meaning progress and growth).
2.Red Envelopes (红包): One of the most beloved traditions is the giving of red envelopes filled with money, especially for children. The red color symbolizes good luck and protection against evil spirits.
3.Fireworks and Firecrackers: Fireworks and firecrackers are commonly set off to celebrate the new year and to ward off bad luck. The loud noises are believed to scare away evil spirits and bring happiness and good fortune.
4.Lion and Dragon Dances: Traditional performances, such as the lion and dragon dances, are common during the Spring Festival. These performances are meant to bring good luck and drive away evil spirits
5.Lantern Festival: The 15th day of the lunar new year marks the end of the Spring Festival, with the Lantern Festival. People celebrate by admiring colorful lanterns, solving riddles, and eating sweet rice dumplings (元宵), symbolizing unity and happiness.
Cultural Significance
Chinese New Year is not just a celebration of the lunar new year; it is a time to honor ancestors, welcome the new year with hope, and enjoy time with loved ones. It is a holiday rich in traditions and customs that have been passed down for generations.
The Spring Festival is also a time for people to clean their homes, decorate with red couplets and paper-cuttings, and prepare for the new year with a fresh start. Every year is associated with one of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac, and the upcoming year will bring new characteristics and fortunes according to the animal of the year.
